About ALC/Coaching vs Therapy

The Many Benefits of Academic Life Coaching

How does Academic Life Coaching Work?

One-to-One sessions:

Location is not an issue! We meet at a coffee shop, public library, over the phone, or the most popular option- via ZOOM video chat. Following an initial interview, each session is 50 minutes for a total of 10 meetings. We may create a system of check-ins between meetings depending on the needs and style of the client.

We design new strategies:

At the end of each session we design an action plan for what the client will try out or pay attention to in the next week. The client is empowered and encouraged to try new approaches, noticing what works well and what doesn't. The ALC program is so effective because the action plan doesn't just come from the coach. Students become EXPERTS IN THEIR OWN LIVES! The client and coach design the actions together and the students follow through with more success!

When teenagers or young adults work with a trained Academic Life Coach:

They learn skills that immediately have an impact on their lives. You are able to see and feel immediate results! Students learn skills that help them get better grades with less stress because they understand their learning and motivation style.

They get more organized because they learn their motivation style and tools to develop effective systems.

They create successful college applications because they develop strong Emotional Intelligence and Personal Fluency.

Students in the ALC Coaching program demonstrate more leadership and become more proactive in their lives.

Positive changes in relationships with teachers, friends, parents, and family members can be seen early on.

Will it be more work?! My schedule is already packed!

No! All "coaching homework" is centered around making all current academic and social goals easier to accomplish.

Workshops

There are a variety of workshops available for parents and teens at schools, host homes, libraries or other forums. Participants receive valuable information and learn practical skills from the Academic Life Coaching Program. Contact Tara to schedule a workshop for your group!

What are the differences between THERAPY &

COACHING?

THERAPY

*deals with identifiable dysfunctions in a person

*deals mostly with a person's past and trauma, and seeks healing

*helps patients resolve old pain

*doctor-patient relationship (the Therapist has the answers)

*assumes emotions are a symptom of something wrong

*Therapist diagnoses, then provides professional expertise and guidelines to provide a path to healing

*progress is often slow and painful

COACHING

*deals with healthy client desiring a better situation

*deals mostly with a person's present and seeks to help them design a more desirable future

*helps clients learn new skills and tools to build a more satisfying future

*co-creative equal partnership (Coach helps the client discover their own answers)

*assumes emotions are natural and normalizes them

*the Coach stands with the client and helps him or her identify the challenges, then partners to turn challenges into victories, holding client accountable to reach desired goals

*growth and progress are raid and usually enjoyable
